Matthew 5:3. I need you.

Matthew 5: 3
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Poor in Spirit.
lacking
empty
sick
broken

and knowing it

Kingdom of Heaven.
a place to live
a home
a hospital
a big yard
a place to grow
a place to eat and drink
family
accountability

I need. I know it.  God knows it.  He provides.

I lay aside my pride to call on you today.  I am poor, and you offer the riches of heaven.  I have nothing, and you offer an eternal inheritance.  I am no one, and you offer a new name and a new identity in Christ.

I need.

I need YOU.

Thank you for loving me first and providing for my need.

I like this story, especially in the context you have connected for us. John the Baptist, the first of his time, assuming the secondary status, illuminating the immiinent arrival and, identity(character) and person of Jesus, so that Andrew would be ready to go and find Simon, and then when Jesus called they would be ready to drop 'everything' and follow Jesus. If John the Baptist or Andrew had not used explicit words what is the story then? A very difficult pantomime? While our actions tend to follow our words, our words are what enlighten the truth for others. Ready willingness and the Holy Spirit make able. Robert Revier

I have been studying the Sermon on the Mount (taking a break from Romans). Last week was looking at the poor in spirit - my study guide brought out the following phrases: Someone not only in poverty, but ABJECT poverty; not only helplessness, but UTTER helplessness and not only destitute, but COMPLETE destitution. Poor in Spirit - those who recognize their complete, utter spiritual helplessness.

Looked at several OT passages - Psalm 34:18, Psalm 51:17 and Isaiah 66:1-2.

Then God led me back to Romans - there is absolutely nothing I can add or even offer to salvation, I am utterly helpless, and completely destitute before God.

Thanks for your insight. Have added to my notes: I lay aside my pride to call on you today. I am poor, and you offer the riches of heaven. I have nothing, and you offer an eternal inheritance. I am no one, and you offer a new name and a new identity in Christ.

Thanks,

kathy
